The Pursuit of Truth: A Personal and Legal Journey

The pursuit of truth has been at the core of my personal journey for years. It has guided me through some of the most challenging and transformative moments of my life, from deconstructing long-held beliefs to redefining my sense of identity and integrity. When I embarked on this path of truth-seeking, I had no idea where it would lead me—only that I had to follow it, no matter how uncomfortable or disruptive it became.

Recently, during a conversation with my professor in a legal writing class, I mentioned that I write for fun. I explained that writing assignments didn’t intimidate me the way they might for others, because writing has been a fundamental part of how I process and articulate my thoughts. When he asked me what I like to write about, I told him about my blog and how it centers on truth-seeking. His response was immediate and insightful: “Well, that is pretty much what law is about, now isn’t it?”

That comment struck me. It felt like a full-circle moment, a realization that my journey—one that I have sometimes felt was uniquely my own—has deep connections to a broader, time-honored pursuit: the pursuit of truth within the law.

At its core, the legal system is supposed to be about seeking truth. The principles of justice, fairness, and due process exist to ensure that truth prevails. Evidence is presented, arguments are made, and decisions are rendered in an effort to uncover the most accurate representation of reality. Yet, as I’ve learned in both my personal and academic journey, truth is not always easy to find, nor is it always welcomed when it challenges long-standing structures and beliefs.

When I began questioning my faith, I wasn’t simply looking to validate my doubts—I was seeking truth, no matter where it led. I had to sift through history, examine doctrine, and weigh the evidence, much like a legal advocate would do in preparing a case. I had to challenge assumptions, interrogate authority, and push past my own biases to reach conclusions based on facts rather than feelings. It was a process of discovery, but also of reckoning.

Similarly, the law requires a commitment to objectivity, analysis, and critical thinking. It asks us to question, to probe, to demand evidence before accepting something as fact. It requires us to see multiple perspectives, to consider precedent, and to be willing to change our understanding in the face of new information.

Returning to school to study law feels like a natural progression for me. My background in truth-seeking, my persistence in questioning assumptions, and my passion for writing all align with the analytical and investigative nature of legal studies. While I am currently studying law from a paralegal perspective, I am also considering whether to attend law school or pursue the legal paraprofessional route, which seems more attainable at my age. My love of truth-seeking, my insistence on asking hard questions, and my ability to articulate complex ideas through writing all align with the principles of legal reasoning.

The correlation between my personal journey and my legal studies isn’t just about methodology—it’s about a fundamental belief that truth matters. That justice matters. That we should never accept something as truth simply because it has always been told to us that way. We must be willing to investigate, to challenge, to stand firm in what we find, even when it is inconvenient or unpopular.

No matter which path I choose, I know that the pursuit of truth—whether in law or in life—is always worthwhile. As I continue my studies, I see this as more than just an academic pursuit—it is an extension of the work I have already been doing for years. The search for truth, whether personal or legal, is an act of courage. And I am here for it.
